Nanotecture’s technology is based on depositing materials around liquid crystal templates to produce films and powders with nanoporous architectures. This technique, which is covered by a portfolio of 16 patents, increases the surface area available for electrochemical reactions by several hundred times over that of ‘standard’ materials.

The diameter of the pores in the film or powder, and the wall thickness between the pores, can be controlled by selection of particular surfactants making up the liquid crystal template. This means that the structure of the material can be optimised to enhance specific properties, for example the power density or the energy density in a battery electrode.
